As a city known for landmark legislations for environmental protection, Davao City is now aiming to reduce its solid wastes by 70% . The proposal of the executive department, represented by the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) is now awaiting the approval of the City Council.
This is just a clip from the privilege speech of Davao City Councilor Angela “Anging” Librado-Trinidad who is the Chairperson of the Committee on Women, Children, and Family. She is defending the passage of the controversial Local Development Plan for Children.
Here is a summary of the speech delivered by Davao City Councilor Teresita Mata-Marañon on her Grounds for Opposition to the Local Development Plan for Children:
It is a mockery of parental authority and not consistent with respect for family, motherhood and children’s dignity.
It is offensive to the virtue of chastity.
The civil authority should consider a sacred duty to acknowledge the true nature of marriage and family, to protect and foster them and to safeguard public morality (this is a mandate of our Philippine Constitution).
Last Tuesday, I attended the regular session of the Davao City Council. The gallery was full of pro-life advocates anticipating the passage of the Local Development Plan for Children (LDPC). During the privilege hour, Councilor Teresita Mata-Marañon spoke of her reasons for opposing the plan. The pro-life advocates were happy.
Then, LDPC’s main proponent Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad spoke in defense of the LDPC. She further explained that Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has asked that the third and final reading and voting on LDPC be deferred. And it was.
After his resignation as City Council Floor Leader, Davao City Councilor Bonifacio Militar left some hanging statements which cast doubt on some of his colleagues. Days ago, he finally named Councilor Conrado Baluran as the councilor who campaigned to oust Militar. Militar then accused Baluran of trying to do some favors for his friends while disregarding proper Council rules and procedures.
The Commission on Audit (COA) has found no irregularities (ie corruption) in the building of the controversial People’s Park. The COA report does not show any over-pricing and impropriety.
As early as October 2007, there has been buzz that Davao City First District Representative Prospero “Boy” Nograles is going to replace long time Speaker of the House Jose de Venecia. Last night (and morning), the inevitable has happened. Nograles was voted as Speaker of the House amidst accusations, uncensored emotions, and loaded statements.
After so much scuttlebutt on the PhP 72 million price tag of the Davao City People’s Park, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is taking an indefinite leave of absence. Duterte is leaving the city to make way for the Commission on Audit’s investigation of the project. Duterte has vowed to resign once the COA proves that there has been corruption and misappropriation of funds in the making of the People’s Park.
Meanwhile, his daughter Vice-Mayor Sara Duterte will take over as acting mayor.
Concerned Davao City residents, led by Davao City First District Councilor Peter Laviña, have started the blog Bangkerohan Bridge that will serve as the online presence of the citizen’s catch on the reconstruction of the Bangkerohan Bridge.
Bangkerohan Bridge, also known as Governor Generoso Bridge I, is currently non-existent. It has been damaged and weakened over time, and it broke last 2007. It has been months and reconstruction of the bridge is yet to start. The bridge is one of two that connects the two parts of Davao City that are traversed by Davao River. Since it has been out of order, traffic in the city has worsened. Last elections, the reconstruction of the bridge was an issue tackled by local and national politicians.
