Quezon III asserted via Plurk that amidst the hullabaloo of the Judy Ann-Ryan wedding, Labor Day, and the Pacquiao fight, the powers that be might be hoping that Jun Lozada‘s arrest might go unnoticed. Add to that the swine flu paranoia and the people behind the arrest might have just succeeded. Unfortunately, not the entire Philippine population isn’t that stupid. There has been overwhelming support for Lozada and resistance to his arrest from various camps: politicians, members of civil society, and even members of the media (traditional and new).
Both Lakas and Kampi party presidents have resigned from their posts. Both Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles of Lakas and Representative Luis Villafuerte of Kampi have resigned as presidents of their parties. This is purportedly a sign of deference to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who now has the free reign to determine the leadership and structure of both parties, giving way to a united administration coalition, and a single standard bearer for both parties.
The report of the Human Rights Watch alleges that local government officials of Davao City and the police are involved in the vigilante killings of local criminals. Similarly, the Commission of Human Rights (CHR) have been conducting hearings on the involvement of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte and other officials with the said killings.
