STATEMENT OF JOEY DE VENECIA III
DISMISSAL OF IMPEACHMENT CASE
DUE TO INSUFFICIENCY OF SUBSTANCE
November 26, 2008

This is a sad day not only for us the complainants and the minority lawmakers, but more so for the Filipino people. Our right to take President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to task has again been taken away from us.
As our minority lawmakers have said repeatedly, this process is a way to let government show the transparency that the Constitution mandates.
The impeachment process is the proper and legal forum to let the people know what is happening and to allow the government and its officials to explain themselves.
It appears that the government would rather that the people take its grievances to the street than offer them a decent and legal forum.
The House Justice Committee might have stopped the impeachment complaint but I assure everyone that the Committee cannot stop us from airing our grievances and allegations in any and all other forums available to us.
We will bring this case straight to the people. We will go to them and talk to them. We will put out into the open what the government would rather keep under the cloak of darkness.
I give my utmost appreciation to all those who supported us in any way. I thank the Filipino people for their sentiments and their prayers.
We will not keep quiet. The fight in the halls of Congress may be over but the real fight for truth and justice goes on.

35 – 4

Four. That’s one less than the fingers on one hand. That’s the number of votes that the Impeachment Intervention got. Out of the 55 members of the Committee on InJustice, only 39 warm bodies were present today. And of that 39, 35 voted to dismiss the Intervention.

Why? I don’t know either. Maybe the facts weren’t clear to them. Maybe they didn’t read the document, or didn’t understand it. But I bet, I bet my life on it, a vote to dismiss it would be the safest thing to do for themselves and their political ambitions.

An Open Letter to Mindanao Congressmen

Honorable Mindanaoan Members of the House of Representatives,

Manolo has appealed for you, Congressmen, to walk the talk. I present to you same challenge. I specifically challenge Mindanaoan congressmen, whose constituents are the victims of the unconstitutional document that is BJE – MOA. It is your people whose land, life, and beliefs were toyed with by the administration in an underhanded power play constructed to make your people believe that the administration cares for them.

It Had to Be Done

A few days ago, I wrote a personal blog entry “Seizing the Day” expressing how I felt about signing the Impeachment Intervention authored by Manuel L. Quezon III. My entry is as follows:

Opportunities like this, to stand up and be counted, are few and far in between. People often contend there isn’t really much that can be done, that what we do is futile, and do nothing to serve the country. This is our moment now, a chance to show and prove that there are more to our words and opinions, that we do not just write for the sake of writing, that we do not speak for the sake of speaking. The things we do are not done to seek attention or prove that we are better or smarter. Rather, we do it because we know we have to.
