Nograles and Dureza

There was a time when Jesus Dureza and Prospero “Boy” Nograles were on opposing sides. A few years ago, they ran against each other to be the First District Representative of Davao City. For quite some time, the two were bitter political rivals.
Now the two stand on the same side of the fence. Nograles, Arroyo’s staunch supporter and lap dog, is currently the House Speaker. Meanwhile, Dureza, the former presidential adviser on the peace process, is now the Press Secretary. Both hold key positions in the government, positions that can make or break Arroyo’s presidency.
If both stay loyal to Arroyo rather the the Filipino people, whom they are supposed to serve, Arroyo will stay in power until 2010 (or longer). Nograles’ strong hold of the Congress, will assure Arroyo that the legislative body will not impeach her, or act in defiance of her regime. Similarly, if Dureza does his job properly, Arroyo is assured that the public will know and believe only what her regime wants them to know and believe.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer editorial asks Dureza… “Will he remain his own man, or will we, too, sort someday through his ashes on the already overburdened altar of sacrifice?”
Nograles and Dureza, both Davaoeños who have their chance at proving that Mindanaoans can also serve the country well. Both have the power to elevate the status and prominence of Davaoeño politicians. Sadly, Nograles has already brought more shame than pride. Will Dureza be the next Arroyo lapdog?
