Delayed Reaction

Al Qaeda leader Bin Laden has issued a warning that there will be a “reckoning” as a reaction to the publication of cartoons featuring Mohammad on a Danish newspaper.

The cartoons were published more than two years ago. Although I empathize with the Muslims regarding the issue, I think that Bin Laden has reacted too late. It is, therefore, questionable that he should react that way. Probably, Bin Laden and the Al Qaeda are just trying to find a justification for something despicable they plan to do.

These cartoons and the issue on terror remind me of a colleague who wrote a thesis on “The Moral Justifiabililty of Terrorism”. According to him, it is this - “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”. Four thousand GIs have died since the US invaded Iraq. But some argue that the US should also be held accountable for the lost lives of many Iraqi women and children. My Nigerian classmate is asking, why are they not sending troops (the US) to the Darfur region? Just asking. Of course, by all means, terrorism must be condemned. It is evil. It is wrong. No political issue can ever be resolved in the name of religion.
