NSO: Gap Between Rich and Poor Widens

Despite the strong peso and the growing economy, the records of the National Statistics Office (NSO) show that the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than ever. 1.74 million families (consisting 10% of the population) considered to be the richest earned 36% of the total 2006 family income. This translates to 10% of the population earning more than 1/3 of the country’s money.

Supreme Court Justice Reynato Puno explains this gap:

“The root cause of this problem is well-known. It is the relentless greed of a few families who, from the beginning of time, have always controlled the wealth of our country….”

“These families have perpetuated their stranglehold on our country’s wealth, dynasty after dynasty. There is no end to their greed, no border to their covetousness.”

Despite the boasts of the government that the country’s economy is getting stronger, the masses, the majority of the Filipino people is yet to experience and enjoy the fruits of this strengthening economy. The government needs to focus less on strengthening the economy, and focus more on social services and how the poor can gain from the economy’s strength.
