Cebu Rep. Pablo Garcia vs Cheaper Medicines

For almost a month, Cebu Representative Pablo Garcia has actively blocked the passage of House Bill 2844 or the Cheaper Medicines Bill. He is said to be one of those who have benefited from the “lobby fund” of multinational drug manufacturers who wish to block HB 2844.

Speaker of the House Jose de Venecia had promised earlier that HB 2844 would be a priority bill, that would be passed on its third reading before the Congress adjourns for the holidays.

As it is, HB 2844 is already being deliberated upon without the inclusion of the Drug Price Regulatory Board, which is supposed to be the implementing body for the Cheaper Medicines Act of 2007 (is passed).

Multinational drug firms are said to have shelled out a lot of money as a lobby fund. And it has already been used to get the support of doctors. Apparently, Garcia is also one of those benefiting from the said fund.

Garcia might be forgetting who he is serving as a Representative. Garcia was elected into office to represent his constituents in Cebu, and their interests, not those of the multinational drug manufacturers.
