Charter Change Revived

Amidst the flurry of intrigues and problems that the administration is facing, the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendments is reviving today the proposals to amend the 1987 Philippine Constitution. While the country is still reeling from the failed Magdalo mutiny, and questioning Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s European junket, legislators are already working on a possible Charter Change.

There are a number of bills and resolutions in the House calling for actions aimed ultimately at a Charter Change. Some are proposing for a constitutional convention, while others are calling for a people’s initiative. While this is certainly an important issue with crucial repercussions, it comes at a time when most Filipinos are busy with their holiday affairs, when only a few have their attention on the government.

Hopefully, our legislators will do the job they were trusted with, to serve the interests of the Filipinos, and not just of those who wish to stay in power, or expand their power.
