Davao City Shelter Code Finally Signed Into Law
November 25th, 2007 at 5:28 am (Davao City, General)
After months of hearings, and readings, and weeks of debate, the Comprehensive Urban Shelter and Services Development Code of Davao City better known as Shelter Code was finally signed into law by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
The controversial Shelter Code has been cause for heavy debates during the 14th City Council. It was approved before the 14th Council closed, but it was vetoed by Duterte. When the 15th Council convened, it was on top of the agenda. For weeks, the Council debated as a Committee of the Whole on each article of the Shelter Code.
The Shelter Code is another landmark legislation by the Davao City Council that provides funding for and institutionalizing housing for informal settlers and other homeless Davao City residents. The code tasks the City Housing Authority as its implementing arm, and the Local Housing Board as the policy-making authority. The Local Housing Board is yet to be established.
Hopefully, the Shelter Code will be strictly and effectively implemented.
