Arroyo Pardons Estrada

“ASAN ANG HUSTISYA?!” (Where’s justice?!) That’s the line that came to mind when I saw today’s headline.
Although I am not surprised by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s decision (by now, nothing she does surprises me), I am very much sad and angry. I am very emotional about this because I was one of those millions of Filipinos who clamored for Joseph Estrada’s impeachment and ouster from office. I was one of the many students who didn’t attend classes to join what is now known as EDSA 2.
I, together with millions of Filipinos, made sure that Estrada paid for his crimes. I followed his trial, and have been awaiting his guilty verdict. When the guilty verdict was handed, and Estrada was sentenced to life imprisonment, I let out a sigh of relief and my faith in the Philippine Justice system and the government was somehow restored. Ever since talk of him being pardon started, I have been writing to express my vehement opposition to it.
Today, I am disappointed and very much angry. Arroyo has given me another reason to cry out “BETRAYAL OF PUBLIC TRUST!” By giving Estrada pardon, Arroyo has only cemented my belief that she is nothing but a self-serving, power-clinging b*atch. Obviously, she pardoned Estrada to appease the opposition and win their favor. Moreover, it seems like she wants to set a precedent.
Whatever the reason, pardoning Estrada will not do this country and its people any good.
