After neither confirming nor denying being offered a bribe, CHEd Commissioner Romulo Neri admitted yesterday that COMELEC Commissioner Benjamin Abalos offered him P200 million pesos in exchange for Neri’s endorsement of the controversial NBN ZTE Corp deal.
Now the beleaguered Abalos is casting doubt on Neri’s motives for revealing the alleged bribery attempt. Abalos is suggesting that Neri may be in cahoots with Jose “Joey” de Venecia III.
And the plot thickens…
So who do I believe? Although there is some doubt with regards to de Venecia and Neri’s motives, I think that they are on the side of the truth. And how about Abalos? His less than stellar performance as COMELEC Chairperson, and his involvement in many questionable issues both COMELEC-related, and NBN-related are definite indicators that this man cannot be trusted. Moreover, the lengths to which the administration has apparently castigated and tried to prevent Neri from attending the Senate hearing, only adds to the veracity of his claim.
As the nation awaits the next development in this issue, all eyes are now on Neri and his next move.
