Should ALL Zoos Be Closed?

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) has called for the closure of all zoos in the country. According to the group, zoos offer a “distorted view of wildlife,” and are not healthy for the animals.
Although some zoos, such as the Manila Zoo should indeed be closed, or at least be evaluated, many other zoos in the country do not deserve to be closed. By definition, a zoo is a facility that confines animals for viewing purposes. In the Philippines, and in some parts of the world, however, zoos have evolved into becoming important research, rescue, habitat, and breeding centers for animals.
In Davao City, for example, the Davao Crocodile Park is not only a zoo for viewing purposes. It is also an educational center where visitors learn more about local flora and fauna. The park also has conservation and research facilities and programs. This is same for the Philippine Eagle Park which is run by the Philippine Eagle Foundation. The center is known for successfully breeding the Philippine Eagle, and for its programs to re-introduce captured and bred animals into the wild.
In Metro Manila, the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center serves the important role of being the shelter for confiscated animals. These animals are usually confiscated from illegal vendors, or traffickers. It is also an invaluable educational center for the children and students in the area who do not have access to the actual wild.
Perhaps, what PETA should aspire for, instead of the closure of all zoos, is a legislation on the safety, health, and quality standards of zoos operating in the country. Whether they like it or not, zoos are necessary.

Hah, these guys are themselves turning into extremists, although non-political ones.
I won’t be surprised if they would go ahead and suicide-bomb Manila Zoo to be able to release the animals.
