Hello “Hello Garci”?

The Senate is gearing to re-open the “Hello Garci” issue once again. This time, in the guise of an inquiry in aid of legislation regarding wire-tapping. Although I am all for seeking out the truth, I think that investigating the issue once again will only be divisive and unproductive. Personally, I think discerning Filipinos already know the truth, and have already judged and will continue to judge Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo based on it. There is really nothing more to be gained from ferreting out what we already know.
While it might be in the interest of truth, fairness, and justice to investigate the issue, I think the Senate’s time and resources will be better spent formulating bills and legislation that the country badly needs. There are a lot of problems the country is facing right now. Among others, the Senate could spend its time on the state of the public education system, the mining industry and other environmental concerns, health care, and a review of the Human Security Act of 2007.
If indeed the Senate cannot be stopped in pursuing the investigation, I hope it will not just be another grandstanding opportunity for those who wish to run for President of Vice-President in 2010. I hope that it will be done in earnest pursuit of justice, and nothing else.
