Failure of Elections in Maguindanao

Finally, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has declared a failure of elections in Maguindanao. They finally got the courage to say what we all already know. So what now? What will happen to the election results there? Will there be more special elections?
More importantly, what steps and actions will the COMELEC take to ensure that the abominable conduct of elections in the area will not happen again? Now, that they have realized their mistakes, they should do concrete steps to punish those who need to be punished. Futhermore, electoral reforms should be adopted to make sure that these failures and mistakes do not happen again.
The COMELEC should keep in mind that they should be working all the time, not just during the elections. It has the burden of protecting the very core of our democracy, the process that empowers the people and embodies what it means to be a nation “for the people, by the people, and from the people.”
