Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte says no to Balikatan Exercises
May 31st, 2007 at 7:08 pm (National Politics, Davao City, Military Affairs)
Despite pressure from Malacañang, Region XI Peace and Order Chair Rodrigo Duterte (also Mayor of Davao City) has strongly opposed the proposal to hold Balikatan war exercises in the Davao Region. Duterte asserts that such exercises will only invite terrorists attacks on one of the most peaceful regions in Mindanao.
I am sure that most, if not all, Davaoeños agree with Duterte on this one. Not only will such exercises create chaos where there is none, it is also unnecessary. Duterte asserts that the local police and military don’t need the training of foreign troops. And I agree with that.
However, there have been reports that American and Australians are already in the region in preparation for such war exercises. Is this the beginning of the end of the alliance between Duterte and Malacañang? It could be. For one, Duterte has never been one to be cowered into agreeing with something he doesn’t believe in. Moreover, I am sure that the Davaoeños will rally behind our mayor, and fight against the holding of the war exercises.

War is not the answer but it is the source for greed and power. Kung matuloy ang Balikatan War Exercises sa Davao Region mas lalo pang magkakagulo.

on this matter, i favorably agree with mr. duterte. this balikatan exercise will just invite more terrorism (not to mention the dreaded DDS) into this part of the country. what will we gain anyway in this balikatan? some few purchases and a lot of screwing of our davaoenas. you see, if americans comes into a place, i tell you guys! they’re into something big! we just dont know yet. but i heard it’s about energy. probably our geothermal energy or maybe we have oil. or maybe they are into treasure hunting! if you see a lot of diggings here and there! that’s a sign they’re looking for the Yamashita treasure! (LOL)
