Filipino Corporations tackle Corporate Social Responsibility

Top Filipino corporations give us another reason to smile and feel great that we are Pinoy. Yesterday (May 30, 2007), the League of Corporate Foundations had a “Walk the Talk” activity that publicized their members dedication to green projects. Among those who participated in the event were Aboitiz Equity Ventures. Ayala Foundation, Mirant, Shell, Petron, Inquirer, and Team Asia. LFC is also having a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Expo on July 16 - 18 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel.

Although I applaud and cheer on the group and the individual corporations, I cannot help but look at the initiative with skepticism. Petron still has to pay for and redeem itself for the Guimaras Oil Spill incident. And all the other corporations involved also still have to prove their genuine and sincere dedication to sustainable development and social justice. Do they pay their taxes correctly? Do they treat ALL their employees justly? Do they have a company policy on waste management?

Still, congratulations are in order. But also vigilance and a continuous monitoring of these companies, their policies, and their corporate social responsibility initiatives are in order.
