A Failing Grade Indeed

The Philippine Daily Inquirer, in its editorial today (May 22, 2007) gives the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) a failing grade for its poor performance during the 2007 Philippine Elections.

…there is in fact justification for giving the Comelec — the Commission on Elections — a failing grade. It has not fulfilled its duty of safeguarding the integrity of the ballot; on the contrary, it has been one of the major obstacles to the holding of free, honest and credible elections. It has not been fair and impartial in its decisions on controversial cases. It has itself been involved in some irregularities.

The editorial points out few of the many offenses that the COMELEC has committed leading up to, during and after the midterm elections. Those mentioned are few but more than enough to justify the failing grade.

The editorial concludes…

The present Comelec’s shenanigans and involvement in many irregularities will ensure that it will go down in history as one of the worst Comelecs the country has ever had. Something has to be done about the present state of affairs before the presidential election in 2010, when it may repeat its role in the scandal-ridden presidential election of 2004.
