Despite pressure from Malacañang, Region XI Peace and Order Chair Rodrigo Duterte (also Mayor of Davao City) has strongly opposed the proposal to hold Balikatan war exercises in the Davao Region. Duterte asserts that such exercises will only invite terrorists attacks on one of the most peaceful regions in Mindanao.

Mike Defensor Faces Defeat With Dignity

Yesterday (May 30, 2007), the administrator’s top defender former Chief of Staff Mike Defensor conceded defeat in the yet unconcluded midterm Senatorial race. According to Defensor, he did so in order “to ease tension” and to discourage his supporters (and in essence Team Unity [TU]) from committing “acts inimical to the essence of democracy and fair play in an electoral battle.”

Still Feels Great to be Pinoy!

My cousin Andrew “Alleba” dela Serna tagged me for this blog meme: What are the 3 signs you see happening now that make you say, “it feels great to be Pinoy”?

1.) I cannot be prouder of Davao City and everything it has achieved. Everything about Davao City is great: the policies, the people, the places… I can go on and on about.

A Failing Grade Indeed

The Philippine Daily Inquirer, in its editorial today (May 22, 2007) gives the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) a failing grade for its poor performance during the 2007 Philippine Elections.

…there is in fact justification for giving the Comelec — the Commission on Elections — a failing grade. It has not fulfilled its duty of safeguarding the integrity of the ballot; on the contrary, it has been one of the major obstacles to the holding of free, honest and credible elections. It has not been fair and impartial in its decisions on controversial cases. It has itself been involved in some irregularities.

Peaceful Elections?

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has hailed this year’s midterm elections as peaceful. And yet at least 126 election-related deaths have been reported all over the country. Right here in our own backyard, a mayoral candidate and his son were slain in their own home allegedly by a political rival.

126. That seems like a small number. If we look beyond the number, and realize that it represents 126 lives, 126 families, 126 human beings, the truth suddenly becomes clear. The 2007 Philippine Elections was not as peaceful as the COMELEC portrays it to be.

The Real Battle

And it has begun… the real battle is now on-going. This is when our fate is determined. Because in the Philippines… election results are not determined during the campaign period, nor on election day… but on those days when we become complacent and apathetic. It’s on those days when the powers that be underestimate our intellect and cheat their way to the top.

So let us remain vigilant. Let us guard our democracy. Let us not rest on our laurels until the very last vote is counted.
