On the hostage-taking of 26 schoolchildren
March 28th, 2007 at 10:10 pm (Media, Daily News)
You must live under a rock if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Yesterday, another shameful Filipino legend was born… Armando “Jun” Ducat Jr.! This attention-seeking joke of a person hostaged 26 (that’s 20 plus six) pre-schoolers, allegedly, to get the attention of the local and international media and “lecture” them on the demons of the Philippine goverment. Ironic does not even begin to describe what happened.
As the drama unfolded, many different questions entered my mind. First off, why is this person, who has already hostaged two PRIESTS, allowed to establish a pre-school? Why is this person not in jail? How does Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla know this person? Why is Ilocos Governor Chavit Singson a “negotiator”? How are the parents and families of thees children? What are they feeling? Among all these and other questions, the last two bothered me the most.
Above everything else, it was a crisis for the families of the 26 children. The media might have spun it differently. But it cannot be denied that the people most affect were the children and their families. Luckily, it did not end in bloodshed. But it could have. What then? What would have happened?
