Garcillano to run for Congress???

As if there weren’t enough incompetent, corrupt and unqualified legislators, MLQ3 reported that controversial Virgilio Garcillano might be field by the administration to run against Rep. Nereus Acosta (of the Liberal Party) to be the Congressman of the 1st district of Bukidnon.

In my opinion, Acosta is one of the more hard-working, accomplished and honorable members of the House of Representatives. Among the causes he advocates and actively supports and works for are the environment and the financing of SMEs. He was the principal author of the Clean Air Act of 1999. He is the with an NGO which focuses on microcredit and livelihood assistance for the poor women of Bukidnon.

And who exactly is Garcillano? He was a formerly virtually unknown and unremarkable COMELEC Commissioner who was thrust into the national consciousness because of his alleged role in the controversial “Hello Garci” tapes. He was missing for a long time, then resurfaced but refuses to cooperate in the investigations on the “Hello Garci” tapes. And the now the administration is thinking to making him run against Acosta?!

THE GALL!!!

The gall you say? Well, Congressman Nereus Acosta is on his third term, meaning, he will no longer be eligible to run for Congress come 2007 congressional elections. Congressmen are only entitled to three (3) consecutive elections as so provided in the Constitution.

Thus, there is really no debate that future (?) Congressman Hello Garci would not contest Cong. Acosta in the next year’s elections. Surely, Garci has the gall, the goal and, probably, the gold to win as Congressman next year. We may not like it but everything is possible in Philippines’ politics. Imelda Marcos won as Congresswoman in Leyte after the former strongman was deposed. Who knows, she may even become the wildcard in the mayoralty race in the City of Manila. The members of the Marcos family are well-entrenched in different branches of government despite their affiliations with the former dictator.

What else is new? We may even award Hello Garci as one of the ten outstanding Filipinos in the future. Heck, he may even be considered as an icon in public service and would go down in history as the best Comelec Commissioner this country ever had. I would not even be surprised if Filipino historians would consider la Gloria as the Philippine answer to US’s Abraham Lincoln when it comes to honesty.

JD, I apologize, I might have been misinformed about Acosta serving his last term. Still, that does not change the fact that sobrang kapal ng mukha ni Garci and the administration for reportedly supporting him.

Apology accepted and I know that you are sincere. It’s is quite different if you used the words: “I…….am……….sorry…” in front of national tv. I know with those words you were just kidding me.

Kung makapal ang mukha ni Garci, di kaya mas makapal ang mukha ni GMA na kahit hindi naman nanalo nakaupo pa rin sa puwesto? The subordinate can only imitate his superior.

We may not like it but there is a probability that we may address Garci as your Honor in the next Congress. Can you imagine accusing an “Honorable” of being involved in an electoral fraud? Weather-weather lang yan sabi ni Erap.
