Garci

Now that controversial former COMELEC Commissioner Virgilio “Garci” Garcilliano has re-surfaced, what then?

For months, investigations on the alleged presidential election fraud centered on the so-called “Hello Garci” tapes and trying to find Garci so he could clear things up. We wanted (and still want) to know if Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo did cheat her way to the presidency. To what extent was the cheating? Who was involved? Was the Filipino people’s money corrupted to secure a victory?

Now that Garcilliano is back, he seems unwilling to cooperate. Allegedly, he is afraid that he might just be harassed and humiliated by the Congress. Rather than prove his innocence and that of the President, he has decided to limit his “appearances” to “exclusive” interviews. Instead of properly defending himself and declaring himself innocent, he has chosen to whine that he is some sort of victim of invasion of privacy, harassment and trial by publicity.

Tell me, if you are accused of a very serious crime and you are 100% innocent, wouldn’t you just say so? Why not clear your name right away, the soonest time possible?

Even though Garcilliano is definitely alive and in the country, he seems to provide no real answers. He does not seem to realize the gravity of his part in Philippine politics. An entire country is waiting with bated breath, but he doesn’t seem to know or care.

Although I am quite pleased that he is alive and within the country, I am also frustrated and angry. When he was missing, I hoped that he would re-surface because I thought that with him would be the clarity, the truth and nothing but. However, he has brought nothing of the sort with him. Instead of the truth, all we get is whining and complaints.

I hope that eventually, he will see that light that the issue at hand is beyond his own needs, beyond his security, beyond his reputation. What is at stake is more than just his life and career. What is at stake here is a country and its people. We need answers. And we know he has it. More importantly, he knows he has it. He might not know it, but he is possibly the most powerful person in the country right now. His words, his testimonies will greatly affect the country.
