The impeachment was finally killed off with 158 yes votes. Only 51 voted to reject the report of the House Justice Committee. Meanwhile, 6 legislators proved themselves to be useless and spineless by abstaining.

Cory Aquino, Susan Roces, the Lasallite Brothers, et al marched to the Batasan.

Partylist Rep. Roldante Marcoleta of Alagad officially filed a libel lawsuit against Dinky Soliman.

Students from the Ateneo and UP expressed their disgust at the happenings in the House of Representatives.

And finally, Speaker Jose de Venecia is the happiest person on earth. He articulated his joy due to the junking of the impeachment complaints. And he tried, once again, to brainwash the Filipinos into believing that this country can only be saved through a charter change. He then proceeded to enumerate politicians who also support his view. And he even went as far as saying that “insurgents” support it as well. Among others, he proposed the adoption of a unicameral parliamentary system with the provision of a transition to federalism within the next ten years (of course with reservations about federalism). He then said that elections would be held once every five years only. He insisted that these reforms would largely lessen corruption. How? He conveniently skipped those details. He also vaguely said that his proposed system would diminish political dynasties. He then proceeded to say that the new government should encourage foreign investment and stop from being xenophobic (read: sell our resources to the highest bidder without regard for sustainable development).

De Venecia also said that it’s time to work on the anti-terrorism bill because “ayaw natin dumating ang atakeng ‘yan dito sa Metro Manila,” with emphasis on Metro Manila. (Which gave me a hint that he doesn’t care about other parts of the country being attacked by terrorists. And reinforced my belief that he does not really care for federalism.) He ended by vaguely saying something about Ed Zialcita’s Mass Housing Bill.
