The Government Offensive

Last Wednesday (August 17, 2005), government operatives raided the apartment being rented by Segundo Tabayoyong, the primary witness in the opposition’s election protest. For what reason? Allegedly, his landlady reported him for something. Does anybody really believe that?

Interior Secretary Angelo Reyes admits that there are no legal grounds for the raid. They didn’t even have the proper search warrant to conduct the search. Supposedly, it was the landlady herself who voluntarily turned over the confiscated ERs. Right!

So what now? Does the confiscated ERs prove anything? Does it prove that the opposition fabricated evidence? Or does it prove otherwise? Does it show that President Arroyo did cheat? We do not know. And we might never know.

The most important issue in my mind is whether the government raid is even legal and constitutional. Or does it even matter to the administration if what they are doing is even legal and constitutional? Are they really that desperate to resort to an illegal act just to save the president?
