Power

There has been much hullabaloo over President Arroyo being named by Forbes as the fourth most powerful woman in the world. Her supporters say that it is a positive thing since she is ranked with the likes of Condoleezza Rice and Oprah Winfrey. Critics, meanwhile, point out that her being ranked as fourth stems from her strong hold on to her position amidst the countless calls for her resignation.

The truth is power does not necessarily translate into anything. Adolf Hitler was as powerful as Pope John Paul II was.

The only certain thing is that with power is influence. Her power ranking only means that she has the capacity to influence even outside the country. Whether President Arroyo chooses to wield her power and influence properly would more accurately spell out for us whether she should be praised or criticized. The ranking does not say much to us, but it does ask a lot from President Arroyo.
